The 7 Best New Shows on Netflix in June 2024 (2024)

Prompted by all the hubbub surrounding this summer’s lackluster box office reports, someone recently told me that these days, many kids aren’t released from school until June. Sometimes the middle of June. Sometimes it’s even later! What — I ask you, dear readers — the f*ck? Never in my young life did I hear the final bell of the school year any later than mid-May, and while I’ve come to miss those scholarly days (and appreciate a thorough, honest education), I can’t help but feel for every child cooped up as the days get longer, the nights get warmer, and the television gets worse.

OK, getting to the subject at hand, there’s actually plenty to distract students among TV’s June releases, but by and large, this month marks the end of the industry’s most ambitious offerings (at least until September or so). With the Emmy cutoff on May 31st — only schools and the TV Academy still abide by the fall-to-spring calendar year — most networks make sure their best titles debut early enough to qualify for a summer awards run, Netflix included.

Well, kind of. Last month saw the launch of a few gold-digging titles. Benedict Cumberbatch is surely hungry for another Emmy in “Eric,” Jeff Daniels goes as big as he can for “A Man in Full,” and John Mulaney may have the best shot of the (sack lunch) bunch with the endearingly odd, strange yet sharp “Everybody’s in L.A.” But these aren’t exactly frontrunners. They’re not even Netflix’s frontrunners, which include “The Crown” (released in November), “The Gentlemen” (March), and “Ripley” (April) / surprise contender, “Baby Reindeer” (March). The question then becomes: Is Netflix changing awards strategy and dropping its best titles a little earlier, or is the streamer simply less interested in ambitious awards-bait (and more interested in gourmet cheeseburgers)?

Netflix’s June lineup points toward the latter. Highlighted by the second half of “Bridgerton” Season 3 — which the streamer chose not to release in time for Emmy contention — the seven best new shows include a third season of a young-adult fantasy (which is fine! but not boundary-pushing) and two acquired titles with infamous final seasons. Heck, they aren’t even all shows. One’s a movie! I’m sorry, but my standards as a critic only allow me to stick to my chosen medium for so long. When faced with recommending “NCIS” Season 16 or a bonafide cinematic masterpiece, I’m gonna go with the film! You deserve it, readers. You deserve the best.

Down months happen. Times change. There’s still a ton to watch, and Netflix’s algorithm for success is doing its job. Maybe that’s bad for theaters, maybe it’s even bad for TV fans seeking the next great original series. But it’s been good business. So perhaps the best way to look at Netflix’s ho-hum June schedule is that it should help keep attention elsewhere, be it on outside activities or that last bit of schoolwork. Netflix, at least, is doing its part for the students.

  • 1. ‘Bridgerton’ Season 3, Part 2

The 7 Best New Shows on Netflix in June 2024 (1)

    Release Date: Thursday, June 13
    Showrunner: Jess Brownell
Executive Producers: Shonda Rhimes, Betsy Beers, Tom Verica, Chris Van Dusen
Cast: Nicola Coughlan, Luke Newton, Luke Thompson, Golda Rosheuvel, Adjoa Andoh, Ruth Gemmell, Lorraine Ashbourne, Hannah Dodd, Simone Ashely, Jonathan Bailey, Harriet Cains, Bessie Carter, Jessica Madsen, Florence Hunt, Martins Imhangbe, Will Tilston, Polly Walker, Julie Andrews, Hugh Sachs, Emma Naomi, Kathryn Drysdale
    Format: 4 hourlong episodes
Best Reason to Watch: We already went over this last month, when “Bridgerton” Season 3, Part 1 was released, and if those episodes weren’t enough motivation to keep watching, perhaps the show’s pursuit of three consecutive seasons in Netflix’s Top 10 most watched programs could fuel you to finish? And for those of you already hooked: May I usher you toward “Bridgerton” week?

  • 2. ‘Sweet Tooth’ Season 3

The 7 Best New Shows on Netflix in June 2024 (2)

    Release Date: Thursday, June 6
    Showrunner: Jim Mickle
Cast: Christian Convery, Nonso Anozie, Naledi Murray, Stefania LaVie Owen, Amy Seimetz, Cara Gee, Ayazhan Dalabayeva, Kelly Marie Tran
    Format: 8 hourlong episodes
Best Reason to Watch: “Sweet Tooth,” a fantasy-adventure series for young adults, started off with a warm, endearing first season and has largely kept the good vibes going since. Gus (Christian Convery) is a “hybrid deer-boy” traveling across a postapocalyptic American landscape in hopes of finding his mother, Birdie (Amy Seimetz). Helping him out is the former football star turned amiable protector, Jepperd (Nonso Anozie), and a rag-tag group of friends they’ve gathered along the way. Season 3 brings their search to Alaska, where Birdie has been conducting research to identify where the plague that wiped out most of the population came from – and, of course, how to cure it. This being the final season, I’m guessing we’ll get some answers.

  • 3. ‘My Next Guest Needs No Introduction with David Letterman’

The 7 Best New Shows on Netflix in June 2024 (3)

    Release Date: Wednesday, June 12
Cast: David Letterman, Miley Cyrus, Charles Barkley
    Format: 2 hourlong episodes
Best Reason to Watch: In between Seasons 4 and 5, Letterman aired two specials: one with Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelenskyy and another with John Mulaney. Now he’s officially back with Season 5, consisting of two more deep-diving conversations between the long-time “Late Night” host and Miley Cyrus, who won two Grammys in February, and Charles Barkley, who may be losing his beloved basketball show “Inside the NBA.” Whatever they decide to talk about, it should be entertaining.

  • 4. ‘America’s Sweethearts: Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders’

The 7 Best New Shows on Netflix in June 2024 (4)

    Release Date: Thursday, June 20
    Creator: Greg Whiteley
    Director: Kelli Finglass
    Format: 7 hourlong episodes
Best Reason to Watch: Greg Whiteley. Even if you don’t know the name, you likely know his work. The director is behind two of Netflix’s best documentary series, “Cheer” and “Last Chance U.” Now, he’s turning his attention to one of the most famous shows in sports: the Dallas Cowboys cheerleaders. “America’s Sweethearts” goes behind-the-scenes with the squad to show what it takes to make the grade and what drives each dancer to a life in the iconic blue-and-white uniforms to begin with.

  • 5. ‘Dexter’ Seasons 1-8

The 7 Best New Shows on Netflix in June 2024 (5)

    Release Date: Wednesday, June 19
    Developed by: James Manos Jr.
    Showrunner: Clyde Phillips
Cast: Michael C. Hall, Jennifer Carpenter, David Zayas, James Remar, Lauren Velez, Julie Benz
    Format: 96 hourlong episodes
Best Reason to Watch: The best reason to watch the first four seasons of “Dexter” is different than the best reason to watch the entirety of “Dexter.” Speaking to the initial merits of the original Showtime series, there’s plenty to admire and enjoy, whether it’s the cheeky sense of humor, sun-kissed Floridian setting, or plenty of sparkling (sweaty?) performances. The twists and turns of each season have solid payoffs… until they don’t, which is why the only reason I can give for completing all eight available seasons is if you’re working on the Showtime prequel series and need to figure out where things went wrong. After all, the ending provided here isn’t the actual end. To see that, you’ll need to subscribe to Paramount+ with Showtime and click on “Dexter: New Blood.”

  • 6. ‘How I Met Your Mother’ Seasons 1-9

The 7 Best New Shows on Netflix in June 2024 (6)

    Release Date: Monday, June 3
    Creators: Carter Bays, Craig Thomas
Cast: Josh Radnor, Jason Segel, Cobie Smulders, Neil Patrick Harris, Alyson Hannigan, Cristin Milioti, Bob Saget (narrator)
    Format: 208 half-hour episodes
Best Reason to Watch: Wow, Netflix is turning up the heat this June by doubling down on once-beloved shows with deeply unsatisfying endings. Is there plenty to enjoy in “How I Met Your Mother,” an oft-charming and inventive network sitcom? Absolutely. Is it also a little bit difficult to go back, knowing the awkward ending and oft-confounding twists and turns it takes to get there? Also, yes. If you know when to cut bait on a binge, then go nuts. Just partake responsibly.

  • 7. ‘Carol’

The 7 Best New Shows on Netflix in June 2024 (7)

    Director: Todd Haynes
    Writer: Phyllis Nagy
Cast: Cate Blanchett, Rooney Mara, Kyle Chandler, Sarah Paulson, Jake Lacy, John Magaro, Cory Michael Smith, Carrie Brownstein
    Format: 118 minutes (feature film)
Best Reason to Watch: Christmas in… June? Why not! While the seventh slot on this list could have easily gone to the many excellent “30 for 30” specials arriving on Netflix this month, IndieWire is bound by law to acknowledge whenever “Carol” is available to the streaming masses. By now, you should have the Blu-ray, but hey, there’s no bad way – or time – to watch Todd Haynes’ masterpiece.
