How To Make A Fairy Garden & 4 Other Fabulous Outdoor Plant & Flower Projects for the Outdoor Extravaganza 2015! - Echoes of Laughter (2024)

Hello there! I am so excited to share this amazing Fairy Garden project with you, along with the projects of 4 other talented bloggers as part of this year’s Outdoor Extravaganza, hosted by Shauna at Satori Design For Living! If you have never visited Shauna, please go over and see her beautiful projects!

I was first intrigued with the idea of making a fairy garden last summer when I visited a large, local greenhouse & garden centre and saw a number of these charming gardens on display. My inner child was absolutely smitten with these tiny gardens of imagination, so I started making plans for making one. My friend and I started collecting small fairy garden worthy treasures to add to our gardens, but the summer got away from us and it never happened. Insert sad face here.

However, we never forgot our plans, so when the local stores began putting out this year’s plants, we spent some time shopping for the perfect small plants for our gardens.

I can’t even begin to tell you how much fun I had creating this tiny garden!

I will share a few tips so you can easily make your own fairy garden too!

We found MANY of our items at the dollar stores and a goodwill store, including the glass cottage, so hopefully you won’t need a big budget for this project!

For this project, you will need:

Supplies:

-a container for your garden. It can be a plant pot, shallow basket or container. {Mine came from a second hand store}

-small plants of varying heights and textures. Ideally…high plants for the back of the garden and low plants for the front. {I picked up plants at Walmart, Home Depot & Canadian Tire}

-small objects for creating pathways and patios such as wood coins, small stones, pebbles or wood blocks, etc. {Mine came from the dollar store}

-moss and moss-covered rocks. {I got mine from the dollar store.}

-a small glass house, cottage or structure, if desired. Check second hand stores and yard sales.

-mini furniture such as doll house furniture or barbie furniture. [Mine came from a second hand store}

-any other fun bits you can find such as mini-animals, birdhouses, etc.

-potting soil

-black garbage bag for lining

-spray paint {I already had paint}

Part of the fun of this project is scouring the dollar store, yard sales,second hand stores, your garage or the forest floor for fun things to add to your fairy garden!

For this project, I chose a basket because I love the look of baskets. This shallow basket came from a second hand store and cost only a few dollars, but you could use any shallow container you wish.

To make the garden water-proof, I lined the basket with a black garbage bag so the plants could be watered without turning into a dripping mess.

I had some mini-furniture,, but I didn’t think the colour would show well with the plants, so I spray-painted them white and let dry for a bit.

Start the fairy garden by planting the tallest plants and/or placing the structure at the back of the container so that it becomes a focal point. Then mark out where things such as stone pathways or patios will go before moving on to adding the rest of the plants.

Now fill in the garden with the rest of the plants and fun bits you have on hand.

And lastly, add moss and/or moss rocks to cover bare areas.

My little garden has an ‘English Cottage’ theme, but you could choose any theme you wish!

My good friend Peggy wanted to make an Asian-inspired ZEN garden and she collected all of these things {except the plants} from second hand stores over the last year, including the little glass panda.

I love how her garden turned out!
